Symposium on

"Business in Development - new avenues for complementarity and collaboration"

Monday, 30 June 2014

Vienna University of Economics and Business
Welthandelsplatz 1, 1020 Vienna, Austria
"Learning Center", room LC2.400

Corporate sustainability reporting has become the norm for many multinational corporations (MNCs). However, the concrete impacts of the global operations of MNCs on society and the environment in developing countries often remain unclear. This is true for both core business activities and projects that pertain to Corporate Social Responsibility commitments.

GLOBAL VALUE (, an EU-funded research project, aims at filling in this gap and creating a toolkit for measuring business impacts on global sustainable development. The toolkit and the underlying methodological framework will be tested in collaboration with several MNCs; including a major agriculture and food processing company in Tanzania and a company from the garment sector in Bangladesh.

Business in Development symposium in Vienna

On 30 June 2014 the GLOBAL VALUE project took centre stage at a multi-stakeholder symposium taking place at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

Two parallel developments motivated the symposium on the role of business in development. On the one hand, the international community calls on business to take on a more proactive role in furthering global development goals, e.g. in terms of financial contributions, accountability, compliance and transparency of operations in developing countries. On the other hand, the debate on measuring impacts of business operations in developing countries has entered the boardrooms of many companies.

The symposium is hosted by the Institute for Managing Sustainability at Vienna University of Economics and Business in collaboration with the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the Austrian Institute for Collaboration in Development Cooperation (ICEP).
